The “Be a Man” Campaign

This poster was taped on a wall near an institute in Sanaa. The Arabic reads as follows:

The “Be a Man” Campaign (or “Stay a Man”)
Join us and tell us your opinion… in the meaning of Manhood? (sic)

An attempt by the youth to reclaim the era of values and manly ethics.

The captions under the photos say: “Not manhood.”

A similar campaign ran in Egypt, I’m told. More and more, Sanaa’s youth have been following trends in Egypt and Saudi Arabia. Saggy pants are starting to show up, although very subtly in this conservative society – but also the tighter style found in the Gulf, and the heavy makeup and “big hair” underneath the veil for women, also common in the Gulf countries.
