The Bayon’s 54 towers are carved with 216 enigmatic faces glaring in every direction and thought to resemble King Jayavarman VII.

Around the turn of the 14th century, the Khmer king of Angkor adopted Theravada Buddhism, brought to Southeast Asia from Sri Lanka. Angkor was in decline, and Phnom Penh became the empire’s new center.
